October 23, 2024 Controversy in the General Election in Mozambique Topic and Guest: On October 9 Mozambicans went to the polls to vote in the general election—citizens were voting for members of the national assembly and a new president as current President Filipe Nyusi of the governing FRELIMO (Mozambique Liberation Front) party term expires this year. Preliminary results from the indicate that the FRELIMO candidate Daniel Chapo is leading. The final tally will be released on October 24. Civil society groups and opposition parties have complained of voting irregularities. Tensions have also risen recently after the killing of a member of the opposition PODEMOS (Optimist Party for the Development of Mozambique) and his party’s lawyer. PODEMOS Presidential candidate Venâncio Mondlane called for a nationwide strike on Monday, October 21. During the protest police clashed with demonstrators. The show features a recent discussion with Estacio Valoi, an investigative journalist based in Mozambique and is with the Centre for Investigative Journalism (CIJ) who dissected the election in Mozambique. The conversation dissected the candidates involved, the disputed electoral process, the role of the youth, the role of multinational extractive companies, insecurity, human rights issues and more.
