Monsters of London - Discover London's Sinister Side
Monsters of London - Discover London's Sinister Side
News of the Times Episode 409 | 1790 - 1834
In today’s episode we look at three cases from London crime history where the perpetrator was labelled a “monster” by the press and public.
Our first case from 1790 was infamous in its day and remembered for decades. Women, usually attractively dressed, were being randomly attacked, often in daylight whilst walking in better parts of London.
The stab wounds were often aimed at the buttocks and thighs.
Our second case from hackney in 1804 involves an exhibitionist, dubbed the Hackney monster, who lurks in the shadows by the well in the church, waiting for women or young girls to come to draw water, and jumping out and exposing himself.
Our last case from 1834 in some respects remains mysterious. A couple with four children are seen to have a pleasant evening when the 15 year old maid departs. In the morning, with no answer at the door over several hours, the residence is broken into only to find a scene of absolute horror. The house is locked tight from the inside.
Three London Monsters during Georgian times is toady’s episode.
For those who enjoy the peculiar, we take a look at a different type of monster to rival big foot and known to the American Indians at the time, spotted and described by the cavalry around 1794!
Hosted by Robin Coles.
