The Tudors: England, 1485–1603: Henry VII And Justice ⚖️ A-level History Learning & Revision

In this episode, we’ll explore how Henry VII reinstated law and order in England after the Wars of the Roses. We’ll discuss several legal instruments he implemented, starting with the Star Chamber Act of 1487, which established a court for prosecuting crimes and addressing petitions, although it affected his reputation. We’ll also look at the Court of Chancery, which resolved feudal disputes and Crown errors, and the Court of Equity, which allowed the monarch to administer justice outside traditional legal limits. Additionally, we’ll cover how Justices of the Peace (JPs) enforced laws and maintained order, while bonds and recognisances secured the loyalty of the nobility.
