In this episode, we’ll describe Edward Seymour, the Duke of Somerset, and his role as Lord Protector following Henry VIII's death. We’ll discuss how Somerset quickly consolidated power by appointing supporters to the Regency Council and controlling government access. We’ll explore his significant religious reforms, including the introduction of the Book of Common Prayer, aimed at satisfying both Protestants and Catholics. We’ll examine the challenges he faced, such as the 1549 rebellion and issues with foreign policy, which led to growing discontent among the Regency Council. Finally, we’ll discuss the decline of Somerset’s power, culminating in his arrest, trial, and execution in 1552 as the Duke of Northumberland rose to prominence.
