Handling:

Året är 2026. Arbetarna lever under jorden i enorma bergsrum och marscheras i raka led till hissar som för dem till fabriken. Härskarna däremot lever i lyx i gigantiska skyskrapor. Världsstaden styrs av storkapitalisten Joh Fredersen som övervakar och dirigerar arbetet på fabriken på en tv-skärm. Hans idealistiske son Freder är förälskad i den helgonliknande arbetarflickan Maria, och det är endast hennes godhet som håller tillbaka ett uppror.
