For most of her life, Berni Slowey has carried the burden of losing her 2 year old sister Rose as her family was evacuating Siagon. In our last interview with Berni, “Setting the Cobra Free” (https://apple.co/2KwhmSo), she shared with us her film “Berni’s Journey” about coming to terms with her life-long guilt about her sister.
And now in a twist of events, Rose has reconnected with Berni and her family through the miracle of DNA testing that made a match through a genealogy website. While immensely grateful for this surprise reunion, Berni is also finding herself uncovering and exposing family secrets in her new documentary film, “Finding Rose”.

As the founder of Vast Universe Productions, Bernadette Slowey directed, produced, co-wrote and starred in the award-winning feature length documentary Berni’s Journey. Through serendipity, the film unexpectedly follows her personal transformation while she travels with spiritual teachers through India on a quest to make a movie about difficult transitions. She shares her stories as a refugee from the Vietnam War, losing her sister Rose in the evacuation, and as a former corporate executive turned filmmaker control-freak resolving perfectionism through the making of her film.
Since the release of Berni’s Journey, DNA test companies have made it possible for anyone to discover hidden stories and surprise revelations of their origin at a rapid rate. Some are happy reunions while others are not as well received. Now that DNA has connected Berni back to her sister Rose, her new documentary film is underway. Finding Rose is a story of two sisters, Berni and Rose, who were separated as toddlers during the Vietnam War shortly before the Fall of Saigon and who reunited 44 years later through a simple $99 mail-in DNA test.
In an effort to retrace what happened the fateful day that 2-year-old Rose went missing, the sisters embark on a journey together only to learn that there are contradictions and cover-ups from the stories retold to hide guilt, shame and regret.
