Michael Yezerski is a four-time Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts Awards (AACTA) nominated composer. He has worked on numerous Australian television productions such as: MR IN-BETWEEN, A PLACE TO CALL HOME, WANTED, and WOLF CREEK. He has also scored feature films such as THE BLACK BALLOON and THE DEVIL’S CANDY. One of his most recent feature film projects was for BLINDSPOTTING.
Blindspotting was co-written by longtime friends and collaborators, Daveed Diggs and Rafael Casal, who also star in this film featuring a wildly entertaining story about friendship and the intersection of race and class set against the backdrop of Oakland. Bursting with energy, style, and humor, and infused with the spirit of rap, hip hop, and spoken word, Blindspotting, boldly directed by Carlos López Estrada in his feature film debut, is a provocative hometown love letter that glistens with humanity.
In this episode, Michael Yezerski shares the story behind the creation of the first piece of music he wrote for the film which was created to simply rediscover the sound of Oakland, California. He also details how his score was uniquely positioned to continually build tension and and delicately transition scenes from dialogue to spoken-word. Finally, Yezerski also describes the two main thematic and tonal threads he created for this uniquely conceived and told story.
