Brian Ralston, who has worked as a composer for 15 years, studied film music composition and conducting under film/TV composer Jeff Haskell at the University of Arizona, and completed graduate level work in the Scoring for Motion Pictures & Television program from the University of Southern California. Ralston’s early aspirations for scoring films began in junior high school when he began re-scoring films using an old keyboard and VHS player. He took a particular interest in the work of American composer James Horner. Horner’s ability to create a captivating, infectious melody through his interpretation of what was on screen, inspired Ralston to pursue his career in film music composition. Ralston’s scoring projects includes the feature film “Awaken,” the syfy feature “Planet of the Sharks” and the score for 20th Century Fox’s “Crooked Arrows” starring Brandon Routh and Gil Birmingham, directed by Steve Rash. Brian Ralston's most recent project is for the dramatic love story, BEING ROSE.
The film is written and directed by Rod McCall, stars Cybill Shepherd, James Brolin and Pam Grier. “Being Rose” follows the story of a widowed ex-cop who discovers that she may have a life threatening illness and decides to go on a solo road trip in a motorized wheelchair. On her journey, Rose meets and falls in love with a charming cowboy, who has to come to a crossroads of his own. Rose soon discovers more than just the simple beauty of New Mexico.
In this episode, Brian Ralston takes us through nine tracks from his score for BEING ROSE: sharing how he had to manage not being able to record with any of his musicians simultaneously in the same room; how he used specific instruments to represent the two main characters as well as the two main threads of the film: the love story and central character's spiritual journey.
