Yves Gourmeur started playing piano at age 6 and the trumpet at 8. At 17 he began playing as a bar pianist. He abandoned the idea of becoming a a solo pianist while he as a lecturer at the Royal Conservatory of Mons in Belgium and began to perform classical, Cuban, instrumental theater and jazz.
Among his compositions for media, he has written the original scores for the films: "Meprises" Misconceptions, "Lombre de lui-meme" The Shadow of Himself and for TV "Geronimo Stilton" season 3. One of his most recent film scores is for the 2018 film, THE HUMMINGBIRD PROJECT.
The Hummingbird Project is a 2018 Canadian-Belgium drama thriller film, written and directed by Kim Nguyen produced by Pierre Even at Item 7. It stars Jesse Eisenberg, Alexander Skarsgård, and Salma Hayek. In the film, a pair of high-frequency traders go up against their old boss in an effort to make millions in a fiber-optic cable deal. The Hummingbird Project had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 8, 2018. It is scheduled to be released in the United States on March 15, 2019, by The Orchard and March 22, 2019 in Canada by Elevation Pictures.
In this episode, YVES GOURMEUR shares how he approached scoring this film before having seen a single frame of film and the results after his pre-liminary scoring work was matched up to the edited film. He also talks about why he chose acoustic instruments over synths ... even for a film that features a lot of communication technology. Lastly, he reveals how he stealthily employed some sound processing to provide some subtle audio special effects without sacrificing the organic nature of the instrument.
