Ep24: Social Medicine – Themes from Congress 2017
At May’s RACP Congress, there was great interest in sessions examining the moral obligations physicians have to society. On this episode of Pomegranate, three speakers from these panels reflect on some of the themes raised at the event.
It’s estimated that socioeconomic (SES) inequity is responsible for half of a population’s health and wellbeing status, with the biological and social determinants of health entwined even before birth. But, as our guests discuss, physicians can assist in the better targeting of resources at every consultation, and improve access to ante- and post-natal care for greater downstream benefits. On this episode Prof Ross Upshur FRCPC, of the Dalla Lana School of Public Health, explains the potential of merging medical records with SES markers, while paediatrician Associate Professor Sue Woolfenden FRACP (Sydney Children’s Hospital Network, UNSW) talks about her work increasing health service access for culturally and linguistically diverse populations.
The podcast also features Dr Brett Sutton FACTM FRSPH, Deputy Chief Health Officer of Victoria, who participated at Congress in a session discussing the difficulties of advocating on health issues that might conflict with political or media interests.
