I have a simple question today...who runs your life? You? Are you sure...? Browsing through my feed this morning I saw an article about a new court ruling that would pave the way for blind people to sue businesses that didn't provide accessible websites. At first blush, this doesn't sound so bad...but at what point does personal responsibility kick in? I'm curious why a blind person who is motivated enough to sue a business owner for not having an accessible website would want to do business with a company that doesn't cater to blind people? It reminds me of the warning on the hairdryer that remind us not to use the product in the shower! Or just yesterday I found out that if your real estate closing agent doesn't WARN you that there are fraudsters out there that might try to steal your money, that the closing agent can be held liable for your loss! How insane is that! These are all examples of yielding control to someone else cleverly disguised as assigning blame! Here's how this works! If someone else can be responsible for your shortcomings, then they must also be responsible for your successes! You are giving over control of your life to someone else. Ben Franklin's oft-quoted statement seems appropriate here, "Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety." At the end of the day, THIS is the case for personal responsibility! Enjoy!
