176 | Make the Most of the 'Cutting Season' of Your Business
There are two main seasons of business: bulking and cutting. I know that I’m borrowing from the fitness industry, but it’s a great parallel for our lives as freelancers. Preparing to grow falls into the cutting category.
In today’s episode, we’re talking about the cutting season, what it is, and how to use it to your advantage. We all know there’s fat around the edges that we could get rid of, so this episode will show you how to do that the right way and make your business more lean.
“Ask yourself, do you need to be doing what you’re doing? Is it producing what you want, the impact that you want? If not, maybe you don’t need to do it right now.”

What a cutting season is. How to use a cutting season to the advantage of your business. How she has used cutting in her own business to grow. 1. Your systemsTake a look at the systems you are using right now. Evaluate them and ask yourself, what systems in my business are working really well, what systems are not working well, and do I need to keep using these systems, or do I need to upgrade my systems for the next growth phase of my business?
2. Your teamDo you have all the right people in place for your next level of growth? Are the people on your team right now the right people? Do they fit your vision for the next level of growth? If not, maybe it’s time to part ways. But if they do, how can you make them feel more empowered? How can you help them do their job better?
3. Your clientsThis is always good to look at, no matter what season you’re in. Who is right for your next stage of growth, who is not right for your next stage of growth, and who are you doing busy work for? Who feels is a strategic partner, and who makes you feel like a minion? Who is helping you produce ROI? Dive into the numbers to get a better idea of who you might cut.
4. Your initiativesWhich projects have been successful for you and what happened? Which projects do you need to work on, or which projects do you need to stop working on? Ask yourself, do you need to be doing what you’re doing? Is it producing the impact you want? If not, maybe you don’t need to be doing it right now.
5. Your mindsetIf you’re looking to grow, you need to level-up your mindset. It’s time to pour into podcast episodes, pour into courses, pour into books. This is the time, this is the moment to get serious, especially if you’re in the cutting season of your business.
