Season 4 Episode 2 Martin Bromiley on creating something amazing from immense personal tragedy and loss
Martin is a pilot captain for one of the UK’s major airlines. In 2007 he tragically lost his wife Elaine during a routine medical operation. This terrible event led to him founding the Clinical Human Factors Group to engage with the healthcare system and campaign for change within the NHS. His wife died as a result of a lack of “human factors” – it was all down to communication issues, leadership, teamwork ineffectiveness rather than medical incompetence.
Martin founded the Charity in 2007 with academics, clinicians, leaders and policy makers. He combines his work with the charity while working as an Airline Captain. Martin occasionally speaks at key events and is invited to input to policy development. His work is widely recognised and his many awards include the Royal College of Anaesthetists Medal and Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. In this podcast we talk about learning from human failure, adaptability and resilience and a need for real systems change with healthcare to address human factor behaviours.
