Michael Bird - The Current Culture (Evangelism Part 7)
For the past few weeks we have been thinking about the topic of Evangelism. This is because we aren’t engaging in cultural conversations simply for the sake of an argument. Our ultimate goal is to point people to Jesus.
This week we are stepping back and taking a look at our cultural landscape. From relativism to secularism to cultural Marxism, there are certainly a lot of isms flying around. Of course the gospel is relevant to people whether we understand each ism or not. But it can help us understand where our neighbours are coming from if we try and get a handle on them, and then that can help us to connect the gospel to where they’re at. There are plenty of great resources on our website to help you learn more, so please do visit it here.
In this week’s podcast we are listening to an address that was given by Dr Michael Bird, lecturer in theology at Ridley College in Melbourne. He expertly analyses how we got to the point we’re at in Australia, he helps us think about where we’re likely to head, and he provides strategise for how we can navigate this cultural landscape as Christians. This lecture was originally given at the Australian Christian Lobby Embolden Conference in 2017 and we thank them for their kind permission in letting us republish it here. You can find videos from the full conference here and the ACL website here.
Christians Engaging Culture (CEC) exists to equip the members of St Thomas’ to give faithful answers in everyday cultural conversations and to turn those conversations to the gospel.
The aim of this podcast is to start conversations around our church community, so please encourage everyone at church to subscribe (and show them how to!) and when you see people, ask them what they thought of this week's episode.
You can find the Christians Engaging Culture website here.
If you are not a member of St Thomas', we invite you to look at the 'About Us' page of our website here.
