FWEP00022 Aileen Hoe
In this episode, we have a very special guest who believes that learning how to have fun and experiential learning are the two key ingredients and that’s crucial to one’s learning.
She is Aileen Hoe the Director of Chinese Champ she is also the assistant secretary for Twi Libraries Malaysia, Committee member of We care Journey.
Children are our Future
Teachers are influential for whatever teachers act students will emulate it. The educator plays a big role in the lives of students. Here’s what Aileen shared about how they get along with the parents, guardians, and kids as well.
(2:19-42) I work with the parents and I train the teachers as well our motto is we make learning fun. So when the kids come through the door, what they do is they have fun and be themselves. Our environment is very nurturing whereby we use positive affirmations for the children and they come and be themselves and we work with them from the mindset.
(3:27-4:02) “I believe as educators we are influencers for the next generation” and always believe in this “I believe the children are our future Teach them well and let them lead the way Show them all the beauty they possess inside, give them a sense of pride to make it easier let the children’s laughter remind us what we used to be”
(4:03-11) So that is the power of being an educator we influence not only the children but also the parents and guardians.
Be innovative
Educators must always make sure to upskills not just themselves but even the curriculum as well. Educators must teach what works best. Aileen shared:
(4:37-41) I believe in this motto “We don’t need to reinvent the wheel”
(4:53)So what I do is I take from the bust a little bit of here and there not so much of like one specific system because I always believe that it has to be customized. And what I had customized for this year may not be applied for the following years because the children they change and live with the technology and so on. Different parenting style as well. So we have to always upskill ourselves.
(5:19- 51)So what we practice to make learning fun so my forte is using music and movements and speech and drama and we put those estimate elements in the teaching of the language. So when the kids come they will have fun and they really feel that they are learning but at the same time through music movement they learn discipline they learn to take turns, they learn to respect one another when they take the turn to pass on to precautions from one person to another person. They learn to listen and that’s recall and response in excellent songs. They listen and they then to receive and to give as well and a lot more can be done from there.
(6:33-41)We believe in a VAK system Visual Auditory Kinesthetic so there’s a lot of personalised attention given although it still in a group.
Calling to teach
Not everyone has the passion to teach young kids and same as with our calling. We all have different calling with different ways of how we respond to that call.
After knowing our call it’s up to us if we’ll take the call or just leave it. Aileen shared her calling and love for teaching.
(7:01-19)Well I was in a corporate finance line for about 5 years and my dad’s been a businessman and my mom’s been a teacher all her life so I always joke that I’m the best of my parents because I’m an education a teacher I’m sitting in my own business I’m half of Half in each of them.
(7:28)I quit my job full-time to go into teaching.
(7:38-16) Once a teacher always a teacher. I was still teaching part-time. I found that very tiring but it was still very fulfilling. But what makes me decide to actually let go corporate finance for good although the pay was good and all that, was actually I gave myself a question, a life changing question I ask myself “What would I do if I only have 1 year to live”? So the answer was very very clear. I knew that I wanted to be with the kids and I just want to be happy and I realized that it’s my calling and that’s what I love to do for the rest of my life.
Roadblocks are temporary
Tears, sweat may shed in our face but these are just part of life as human. Working and living without this stuff is not challenging at all. Aileen shared how she conquers those roadblocks she encountered being an educator and businessman as well.
(8:42-9:42) It has been sweat, tears, of course, there’s a lot of challenges, financial challenges it’s not easy being a working mom I went through pregnancy being a new mom. So I went through a divorce a few years ago and that was very hard but I would say that there’s a lot of voices some of them into no voices, some of them are external voices. It was very hard to distinguish from what’s right and wrong until I actually sit down and think back like what kind of clarity to achieve clarity so that I will be able to really listen to my heart and what I need to do and how to prioritize but I will say that I am very thankful that I have a very good support system.
(10:42-11:17) I cried a lot, I laugh a lot as well along the way and I guess it’s through that I begin to understand myself better and I take it as a journey and looking deeper. I would say that I don’t even know that I have this side of myself. Until I went through it and realized that there’s nothing too difficult to be able to overcome when you have the right mindset towards things.
(11:26-39) Sometimes too much of a mind person and when it comes to feeling it. Honestly, I’m the kind who numbs my feelings to be able to not feel pain.
Look at yourself
Sometimes because we are so busy with our business, family, and friends we tend to forget to look after ourselves. We forget that we need to take care of ourselves. Aileen encourages us to:
(12:21-50) I spend a lot of time on my own as well to feel myself and to understand because different face of situations it brings out the best and the worst in me. So it’s about getting myself space to understand that okay I need support and I’ll come outreach out to the person, people whom I know who will be able to give me this emotional support at this time
(12:56-13:23) If you feel that you just need to go into a cave and stay for a week, a few days a few hours give yourself permission to do that. Because taking care of yourself is most important as a woman and as a mother as well and I would say that if you don’t take care of your emotional and mental health then it definitely will not help in whatever you are doing with our kids.
Know your priorities
There were people who can still say that “I have no time” but in fact, we have 24 hours that we enjoyed every day. It only varies on how we manage our time and priorities.
Aileen shared about her priority.
(13:33-38) I always like to think that I have it all but again it’s how you define all
(13:42-14:16) The first thing everyone has 24 hours in a day so it’s how we make best of the time that we have how we prioritize. Sometimes I have to put sudden things down to be able to attend to other things. I would say that I always make sure that whenever the phone rings if it’s my daughter who calls me or my family members who call me I’ll leave everything aside for them if there's anything that’s required from my members of family I will attend to those things first.
