This is the edited recording with annotations of the talk given by Sis Sylvia Bay on Sat, 25 July 2020 at Buddhist Fellowship 'Facebook Live'.
Bojjhaṅga or the 7 Factors of Enlightenment ("7FE") is the final part of a 4-part series (earlier, Right Action, Right Livelihood, Wrong View) that emphasises on the critical importance of being wholesome in body, speech and mind for ease of daily living. Sis Sylvia first explains what the regular mind is like and that upon 'contact' how stress, getting caught up and becoming heedless can conditionally arise. Using a suite of different suttas related to 7 Factors of Enlightenment, Sis Sylvia explains how even when 7FE are not mental faculties but mental states that are fleeting, one can experience relief. The crux of the talk, however, is about how one sets the conditions for these 7FE to arise, to cultivate them to become faculties (4 steps) and how to apply them and in explaining the 7FE, regular mindfulness (sati) is differentiated from the enlightenment factor of sati. In the end, Sis Sylvia shared a beautiful sutta on the far shore describing extinguishment.
