The Kitchen Table with Alicia Brown
Health & Fitness:Nutrition
Alicia's journey from disordered eating to Intuitive Eating
Alicia shares how the poor relationships she had food and her body growing up ultimately influenced her becoming the antidiet dietitian she is today. She shares details about her first encounters with negative body thoughts and trying on several diets, attempting to “fix” her overweight body and cure symptoms before being formally diagnosed with celiac disease just before college. She explains how the diagnoses prompted her getting “caught up in the spiral of restriction” as she began restricting other foods from her diet. She was picked up from college by her parents and put in an eating disorder treatment facility for anorexia where she says she officially hit “diet bottom.” Near the end of the episode she encourages listeners to assess how their relationship with food is impacting other areas of their life, using Casey Berglund’s “The Purpose Map” referred to as the purpose triangle in the episode. Alicia provides hope through the practice of intuitive eating for listeners who might be feeling the same way she did or struggling with the relationships they have with food and their bodies.
