Before European settlement in New Zealand, taewa - or Maori potatoes - was a staple food crop. By the 1800s, taewa had also become an important commercial crop, playing a key role in the introduction of Maori to European economics. Ethnobotanist Dr Nick Roskruge from the National Maori Vegetable Growers Collective talks to Karyn Hay about traditional growing methods and how to cultivate taewa in your own garden, as well as some other crops you can try.
