James France, our expert professional for this episode. James is the founder and Managing Director at Vanguard Luxury Brands, an independent importer and distributor of coveted premium spirits. Prior to founding his own business, James had an extensive career in the beverage industry, working in marketing for some of the worlds’ most famous liquor brands. Beyond his incredibly successful career in Australian bar and beverage industry, James is an all round legend and great guy, and you’ll soon hear why he has been described as one of the most respected and likeable people in the industry.
Anthony Gunawan, our incredible young professional, is the Bar Manager at Chaco Bar, one of Sydney’s best (if not the best) Omakase restaurants. Anthony has worked in hospitality since the age of 13, but found his passion in bartending where he has held multiple roles leading to his managerial position at Chaco. He is an expert in all kinds of Japanese drinks, from mixing to more recently producing his own bottled Yuzushu and Plum Wines.
In our chat we unpack the Australian Bar and Beverage industry and hone in on topics like what makes a great liquor brand, the dynamic between distributor and bar manager, what it means to be truly hospitable and generally what it takes to thrive in the industry.
