Episode 7 | The One Where Kara Gets a $250k Education
Is it possible to receive a college education without going into debt? The average cost of a program without living expenses in Canada is $12,018, while one year of in-state tuition in the United States is $21,370. No matter what way you spin it, the cost is unaffordable for most and particularly harms lower-income families who are trying to better their future.
Kara discovered her love of finances courtesy of her quarter-life crisis. Broke, underemployed and saddled with student loan debt, she realized that her lack of financial education was crippling her adulthood.
But everywhere she looked, it seemed like only rich, white couples were giving financial advice. Being a single pringle, and working 5 part-time jobs, Kara decided to start Bravely as a place where other people who didn’t fit in in the financial mainstream could come to learn about and change their money.
Kara paid off $25,302 in loans on a salary of less than $30,000, the final $18,000 in just ten months. After becoming debt-free in June 2015, Kara created Bravely to help other women take control of their financial lives.
