Welcome back to ArtBeat Radio! You’re listening to episode 16 of Quarantunes, where quarantine can’t stop our creativity! Today we hear musical expression from the artists at EPI. (0:16) We Are EPI Theme Song Written by: Elizabeth Correa, Jamond Pearson, Adam Murida, and Emilio Zuniga In the class, “EPI: The Musical class”, the artists composed, edited and performed their original song that will be the opening number for their musical. The song was created to give a brief overview of who EPI and what EPI enjoys together as a community. Each artist who worked on this piece shared an idea, helped choose the lyrics for the song, and performed an instrument of their choice on the track. The following are the instruments included in the song and who performed them: Elizabeth: piano, drums and bass, Adam: ukulele and shaker, Emilio: drums, Jamond: vocals, Jessica (MT-BC): vocals and guitar Welcome to EPI Welcome to EPI Welcome to EPI We have some fun We’ve got music, even pianos So come along and play with me We’ve got art for me and you We’ve got painting and drawing too We are EPI We are EPI We are EPI So come and sing with us (1:12) Improvisation Loops- Rudy Austin This improvisation piece was created by EPI artist, Rudy, that uses a combination of prerecorded melodies and improvisational melodies recorded by Rudy himself. Rudy first chose three prerecorded loops that he thought would fit best with his improvisation. He selected 2 prerecorded piano loops and 1 prerecorded conga loop. All loops were created by Garageband. Rudy then put all the recorded loops together and recorded his own improvisation on the piano using Garageband. The focus was to express himself through the piano and how he was feeling as he was listening to the music. With all the melodies combined, Rudy created this original piece. (3:14) Meditation of LoveThis piece was created by artists in the EPI Movement & Music class. This class participates in guided meditations every week and decided to make their own meditation music that can be used against a meditation script, a sound bath, or for listening during any meditation activity. Artists started with a loop of ocean waves and chose the key of F Major for the rest of the song’s layers and instrumentation. The key of F major relates to the heart chakra, thus giving this song its title “Meditation of Love” (5:24) Get to Know Us - Emilio Lopez, Rita Komsky, Joyce Go, Jonathan Draper, and Griselda Ramos This is an autobiographical song, collaboratively written and recorded by the artists in EPI Track 2, Social Music Therapy. The verses are created from an amalgam of responses that students gave during a “getting to know each other” sentence completion game. The chorus consists of lyrics that were voted on as a group. Once the melody was recorded, the class worked together to select instrumentation Yoyo’s Favorite season is the summer Rita really loves the color red Joyce looks up to her sister Johnny’s favorite thing is seeing friends Get to know us here at EPI We’ve got a pretty cool crew right here Learn and grow all together Through the days, the weeks, months and years Joyce’s favorite creatures are cats Daniel always smiles when we sing Hannah loves her Disney movies Yoyo wants to fly in an airplane (7:06) Seattle Soundscape- Emilio Lopez, Rita Komsky, Joyce Go, Jonathan Draper, and Griselda Ramos This is an interpretive soundscape that the EPI Track 2 Social Music Therapy class created based on their virtual group trip to Seattle Washington. The group voted on Seattle as a destination that they wanted to visit, and then four sites were selected: Pike’s Place Market, The Space Needle, The Chihuly Garden and Glass exhibit, and the Woodland Park Zoo.&n(continued)
