When Real Salt Lake’s Lovel Palmer’s shot hit the cross bar above Nielsen’s head, he and his Sporting Kansas City teammates claimed the franchise’s second MLS Cup and the city’s first championship of any kind in nearly 30 years. Nielsen retired after that match. While most athletes will tell you that they tune out the crowd and the elements, Nielsen admits the crowd kept him motivated in the coldest MLS Cup final in history.
