Sermon Discussion Guide (for use at home this week)
Opening prayer: Thank you, Jesus, for continuing to produce fruit to your glory, for you alone have given me life; AMEN.
About Me
Think of a time when you struggled to change a habit. What was the habit? Why was change difficult?
Into the Bible – 1 John 4:1-11
Verse 1: Why does John say to “test the spirits”?
Verses 3-4: How can we recognize the spirit of God?
Verse 4: Name the specific comfort in this verse.
Verse 5-6: Identify two contrasts in these two verses.
Verse 6: How do we know the spirit of truth?
Application
15 I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know what his master is doing. But I have called you friends, because everything that I heard from my Father, I have made known to you. 16 You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit, fruit that will endure, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask in my name. John 15
In Sunday’s sermon, Pastor reviewed the concept of free will. What is free will, and what is it not? How does free will (or its lack) relate to original sin?
In Sunday’s gospel reading from John 15, Jesus describes himself as the Vine. What is the relationship of Vine & branches? What’s the relationship between love and commands in John 15:9-11?
Look at the verse above. Describe the difference in relationship between a servant and a friend. What is the purpose & work that Jesus chose us to do?
“…but honor, serve, and obey them, and give them love and respect.” Our relationship to our parents is one of ongoing love. Name two ways that a family relationship gives additional opportunities to bear fruit to Christ’s glory.
“Witnesses of Resurrection Peace - Fruit for Eternity.” What’s the relationship between Christ choosing us and the fruit that we bear? How does fruit give glory to Jesus? Name two specific areas, circumstances, or relationships where you’d like to improve in demonstrating love this week.
Jesus feeds his branches. Write a prayer, asking Jesus to feed his branches today. Include in your prayer the name or names of someone who has become disconnected from Jesus, and pray for them by name.
Prayer: Father of lights, every good and perfect gift comes from you. Inspire us to think those things that are true and long for those things that are good, that we may always make our petitions according to your gracious will; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. ; AMEN.
