The Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum operated for over a hundred years from 1864 to 1994 as a state owned psychiatric hospital in West Virginia. Well intended like most 18th and 19th century state mental asylums, it quickly became overpopulated and underrun which led to brutal practices such as locking unruly patients in cages and performing forced lobotomies. Since 2007 it has been open for tours and ghost hunts where many have reported strange occurrences from the patients that still reside and refuse to leave.
