As parents we want the best for our children. When we select their education path are we asking the right questions? Have we taken everything into consideration from the impact that the social setting can have on your child? Your child may spend only 4 years in another country but the social effects can impact them for life. Have you researched about what happens beyond the classroom? Have you made a plan of how to support your child?
I speak to Wangu Mvula about her experiences having been educated on three continents. We discuss the pros of a global education. We also talk about the toll that things like racial discrimination has taken on her mental health. In addition, we explore the idea of re-assimilation back into her home country. We do not have exact answers but I think as current student or parent it will definitely give you something to think about as you explore different education paths.
Wangu Mvula is currently a junior double majoring in chemistry and International Political Economy in the US. In her free time she loves to dance , read books and spend quality time with family and friends. She is easy going, goofy and ambitious. On campus she is a part of AFRO club and the International Students organisation. Wangu is passionate about gender equality and ensuring that women and men are afforded equal opportunities for their self actualization. She is particularly interested in intersectional approaches that focus on the different identities that we take up when addressing inequality. A lot of the views she holds have been shaped by the education she has been privileged to receive and she hopes sharing her story and experiences inspires girls and boys to value education and what it brings to our societies.
