ANOTACE
Russia's position between the West and the East makes this country at once the subject and the object of Orientalism. This duality is explored here, on the one hand, by pondering over the history of Russia's interactions with 'the Orient' - including such wide variety of entities as nomadic peoples of the steppe, Islamic empires of the Near East, and Manchu rulers of China; while on the other hand, by considering Europe's contacts with and perceptions of Muscovy and later Russia, as well as Russia's attitude to the West. By looking at these contradictory trends, this lecture aims at raising awareness about the complexity of perceiving 'the Other' and the paradoxical dynamics of Russia's shifts between perceiving itself as the East and the West.

INFORMACE O PŘEDNÁŠKOVÉM CYKLU
V úvodních týdnech studenty seznamuje s Orientalismem od Edwarda Saida a představuje významné Saidovy následovníky (autory postkoloniálních studií, např. Gayatri Spivak), odpůrce (např. Wilhelm Halbfass) a ty, kteří se Saidem polemizují a vztah k “jinému” v “Orientu” zkoumají pomocí odlišných metodologií (např. Ian Buruma). Předmět následně představuje reflexe orientalismu a postkoloniální teorie v jednotlivých areálových disciplínách zaměřených na Blízký východ, severní Afriku, Vietnam, Japonsko, Koreu, Čínu, Tibet, Rusko a Turecko.
