20th century business practices taught us to be “replicators”, focused on producing clear results as efficiently and consistently as possible in order to scale linear growth; month after month/quarter after quarter/year after year. The variably of creative thinking and experimentation was put through the extruders of TQM and Six Sigma processes by eager ROI seekers.
In an era of radical transformation however, this no longer works. To ensure our relevance/survival, we must become Navigators focused on innovating new ideas and approaches that create sustainable value.
The key to crossing what I describe as the “Liminal Gap” between these two mindsets requires rethinking risk, as I observe that nearly every tactic we believed kept us safe in the past of replicators, [silos, incremental thinking, hierarchy] is now creating vulnerability in the era of navigators.
So what does it take to shift from cultures of efficiency to cultures of learning?
In this conversation we speak with John Hagel, Chairman Deloitte Center for the Edge about navigating versus replicating.
