Prescription can block your thyroid.
4 common ways
Step 1: Block T4 to T3 Conversion
Medication for Hyperthyroidism
Medication - Beta Blockers
Narcotics
Antidepressants
Step 2: Block TSH hormone from the brain
Step 3: Block Thyroid Hormone Gland
Medication
Step 4: Block THyroid Medication Absorption
Example:
You're in chronic pain so you are taking narcotics which is impacting your mood and you now have depression. So you are on an anti-depression.
Which will then put you on a thyroid medication to help with that…
Then you end up experiencing constipation or acid reflux so then you get on acid blockers, fiber etc.
So we need to be careful how we are taking medication

This is episode 51 medications at block thyroid hormones. Welcome back to the thriving thyroid podcast, where we choose to become empowered patients and take our health into our own hands. Hi, I'm Shannon Hansen, a Christian entrepreneur, a mom of three. And after dealing with my own health mysteries, I made it my mission to learn everything I could about the thyroid. I soon became certified as a holistic wellness practitioner, a functional nutrition practitioner and a functional diagnostic practitioner. And so much more. After that, I founded the Revolut thyroid program, the handsome method as a health professional and a mom. I fully understand the importance of having a fun, simple, and sustainable plan for achieving a responsive thyroid. So I share actionable and practical strategies for developing a responsive Throid so that the ambitious moms and women can gain freedom from fatigue and lose the thyroid weight once. And for all each week, I will be here for you along with my guest experts, we will be sharing simple and tangible tips that work for not only your thyroid, your hormones, your family, and your mindset, so that you can get back to living the life that you envision for your yourself. Welcome to the thriving thyroid podcast,
(01:27):
Happy day. Okay. So this week on Facebook, we have been talking about thyroid medication that or medication that is blocking thyroid function. We'll say it that way. We have all, all these notifications. So I wanted to dive into this and kind of sum this up through a Facebook live and give you guys some information that you can use if you haven't been able to catch all of the different parts of this week's training. So it's all right here. and we're just gonna summarize a lot of this. So there are prescription medications that counteract your thyroid, right? They block your thyroid hormones from creating, from working, from being absorbed from producing inside the body. And I feel like if a lot of you guys are well, a lot of the women that we work with inside the Hampshire method for thriving thyroid, they are taking multiple medications, some 1, 2, 3, and some are up to, I think we've had up to 18, 16, 17, 18 around that.
(02:41):
And once we get into some of these medications, they're gonna, they're gonna fight against, against our thyroid from working and having the hormones that are needed. So there are four common ways that this can happen. That medication blocks the hybrid. So the first one is it blocks T4 to T3 conversion. So the first way is it blocks T4 to T three's conversion. So we are blocking that first conversion right there. Then we're gonna feel tired, but we're gonna feel our metabolism is gonna slow down. We're gonna feel puffy. We're gonna feel inflamed. We're our cancer and feet are gonna be cold. You guys are gonna feel very hypothyroid, right? Where you just don't feel like yourself. , you know, something is off. Okay. The second way is certain medications, block TSH production, this, and we'll get into this. This can be a beneficial thing if we have certain conditions.
(03:52):
Okay. So if we have a pituitary tumor or something like that, we may wanna slow the, some of these, these hormones just so that the tumor doesn't grow. Okay. The third way is it blocks thyroid hormones gland. So your specific thyroid gland from working from, from producing any hormones at all, and then number four, is it block medication absorption? And this is probably the number one thing that I see happen over and over again is y'all are taking medication and you've been on it for 18 months or so. And you just feel no different right? Your doctor says, give it six months. You'll feel better. At the end of the a six months, you hit that six month mark and nothing has changed. You're still feeling worn now, tired, puffy, and flamed. Your body hurts. You just don't feel like yourself.
(04:52):
You are 10, 15, 20 pounds heavier than you should be or what you're comfortable being. So this is an issue, right? Is, is that absorption factor. And we're specifically talking medication today. There are other things I can block the thyroid from being able to absorb medication. But we're not gonna get into that today. OK. so step number one or not step number one, but like ways, number one, that T or medications that block T4 to T3 conversion. So going back to T4 to T3, everybody has T3. We need T3. We're gonna feel it. If it's off, we're gonna feel tired and sluggish. There are medications specifically designed for hyperthyroidism that blocking this conversion can be very beneficial for people who are experiencing hypothyroid is hyperthyroidism. And that makes up about, I think it's, you know, from 20 to 30% of the population of women with IRO imbalances.
(06:04):
So this is on the lower side of things. So PTU medication, and Metzo, I think I said that, right. me that are also beta blockers are gonna block this. So if you are experiencing tremors in your body, your Dr. May put you on a beta blocker if you're experiencing blood pressure issues. Definitely talk to your doctor about that because there are other forms of medication for blood pressure issues that are not beta blockers as well. So talk to your doctor, your physician about that so that you can improve this T4 to T3 conversion. And then also we doctors use beta blockers to help treat social anxiety. So there's that inside this, we also have narcotics, so heavy duty pain medication the opioids and things like that. They're gonna block T4 T3 conversion. So something to be really, really mindful of, if you are experiencing chronic pain maybe looking into alternative more natural methods to help support that pain.
(07:21):
Things like CBD has been very beneficial. The one thing with CBD oil that I would kind of caution everybody when I was using it for my own social anxiety, anxiety in general is learning that taking CBD oil orally, you're only getting about 10% of the benefits because of the way that it breaks out in your body, your enzymes and things like that start to diminish the effects. So I would have to take it multiple times a day to really feel that sustainable, right? The calm inside. So with CBD oil, I found that using it transformer. So using it through the skin is you're getting about 80% of the effects of that CBD. It is a little bit more expensive, but those patches do for 24 hours, which for me as a mom being busy on, on the go, I didn't have to remember to bring my CBD with me.
(08:28):
I just took a shower, popped it on, you know, and I was able to go. So looking into that can can be beneficial. And then the last medic that into blocking T4 tot three conversion is any medication that treats depression. So really the best solution for treating depression and your thyroid is to treat the thyroid. Okay. I, and I always stop here for a minute because depression comes in many different shapes and sizes and losing a brother to suicide makes me probably, a little more sensitive to women struggling with depression, especially suicidal thoughts and actions related to depression. And so if you need to use depression medication to help get you over that hum. So you can function while working and treating the thyroid, working with our team and the handsome method or whatever you guys choose. That's gonna be the best way.
(09:45):
And then in synergy, without working with your doctor to get you off the medication and get you past that, right, that's always the goal for me is to get you guys off as many medications as you can be. We've had great success with that inside the Han method. Some women are completely off medication now with the help of their doctor and their physician, you know, weighing them down. Other people are still on my saving medication and that just won't be an option for them. so that's the first section of medications that block thyroid function or T4 to T3 conversion. So the next one we're gonna talk about is blocking tssh hormones from the brain. So steroids, you guys, if you have autoimmune condition, if you have chronic pain conditions like RA or something like that, you're probably gonna be using some form of steroid.
(10:41):
In addition to that steroids are used for even simple things like sinus infections. So again, maybe just talking to a doctor about, Hey, , you know, what are my options here for helping with these different conditions that maybe a aren't a steroid? So you're not bumping up against the, the TSH production. The next thing is dopamine antagonist. This is really I'm sorry. Yeah. Dopamine antagonist. So this is isn't really common. We don't see this a lot, but this is really common for treating things like Parkinson's disease. The one that we see probably the most inside the handsome method is going to be that Metformin Metformin is used for it's used all the time. Uhm, not trained in medicine but I, I feel like it is overly used and is one of those medications that doctors give to make people happy, right?
(11:51):
Because they'll use it for weight loss. They'll use it for antiaging. They'll use it for people with insulin resistance when really what we need to do is support some of the other functions prior to just prescribing that medication. Okay. Changing lifestyle, changing dietary things, all of that can help aid in, in that function. It's been kind of interesting because lately I've heard from many people they're like, I'll just take the medication. I don't wanna do the work and it's kind of, I don't wanna say funny, it's an seen line of thinking for me because I fall on the opposite end of that. Right. I wanna take no medication. Because just since we're starting to see in these first two sections of medications, medications come with side effects, so it may help with one area, but what else am I hurting in, in, in the intern?
(12:59):
Right. So back in high school, if you guys would follow me for a while, back in high school, I took ACUTA and birth control. And that really spiraled my hormones and everything way out of whack. And if I would have been taught, that was really the big thing. Acme was a outward expression of what was happening inside I would've changed. Right. I would've changed my diet. I would've changed my nutrition. I would have you know, lifestyle, like I would've done past oil packs and I would've eaten things, not supported liver function and, and cleansing my body anyways. that's kinda a side, a side note. So that's, that's where Shannon falls. Okay. Number three medications that block thyroid gland. So they block an, they block this by an interference. So if you, I don't know football very well, but I'll they, they have in football interferences that happen that block the quarterback from making the touchdown.
(14:09):
Right. At least I think that's what it's I have some would probably correct me or more detail, but medications like potassium, iodide lithium. So lithium is going to be those mood stabilized mood stabilizers for things like bipolar and bipolar people. If you've been diagnosed with bipolar, those people do better with levels of T3. So you may want to talk to your doctor again, depending on labs, finding the right doctor, all of the things about possibly getting on A3 medication to help support bipolar. Right. and, and looking for some more natural ways that way. And then the fourth way that medication block thyroid is through absorption. So of you guys, an example, if you are in chronic pain and you're taking narcotics, which is impacting your mood, so now you have to be on mood stabilizers. So you're on like an antidepressant or something like that, which then turns which then the doctor is gonna put you on thyroid medication to help with that.
(15:25):
Right? Because you're in chronic pain. Oops. We gotta, we gotta figure this out. So that's gonna suppress your mood. It suppresses a lot of hormone function inside the body. It's gonna block the serotonin, the dopamine responses. So you're gonna feel depressed. You're gonna feel sad. You're gonna feel moody. You're gonna feel irritable. You're not gonna have that like zest for life. And then your doctor is gonna say, oh my gosh, , you're putting on weight and this is happening and that's happening. Your hair is falling out and they're gonna check your thyroid and oh, here, we gotta put you on another medication. And then, so we're on pre medications now. And then you end up experiencing constipation or acid reflex or heartburn. And so then they put you on an acid blocker, right? An anti acid or fiber or something. So then you have to now be careful about taking medications, right?
(16:25):
So now you're on four medications and a lot of this can be the word isn't coming to me, moved around so that you don't have to be on the medication and you don't have to experience the side effects. Right? one of the big things that I believe in is informed consent. And if you guys are dealing with chronic pain, nobody wants to deal with that, right? Nobody wants to be in pain, it's gonna impact and interfere with your quality of life. But if we can find you a more natural option or a ma more natural solution to this, then you're not gonna be boom, boom, boom, right? Like all of these other things, aren't gonna go outta balance. And you're gonna feel better, right? You're gonna be able to show up in your life for who you are meant to be.
(17:23):
So medications that kind of go along with this. And these medications, like I said, are blocking the fibroid medication from being absorbed inside the body. Those are gonna be those acid blockers, protein pump histamine blockers, even over the counter medications, like the, I think Pepto bisol the tongues, those types of things are gonna block the acid and block the absorption. Now the other thing with acid blockers they would also reduce nutrient absorption. And so really we shouldn't be using those for more than two weeks at a time. And I know people who have been on them for years. And so then our nutrient content goes down. Then we start having mineral imbalances. Then we start experiencing all kinds of other side effects. OK. The next thing is fiber. This is why we have to take fibroid medication away from eating is because fiber, either over doctor prescribed it can block the absorption of that thyroid medication.
(18:35):
So fiber is definitely a good thing. I'm not saying don't have fiber. Don't hear that. What I am saying is that's why we have to take the medication away from, from eating. Okay. Other, my medications that help with inflammation and ulcers estrogen in treating menopause or low estrogen levels that will increase thyroid binding globulin. So again, just won't have the thyroid hormone the absorption of the thyroid hormone and then last but not least, and this is a big one. caffeine. You guys caffeine is going to stimulate the digestive tract and give less time for it to be absorbed. So, and I, again, I see this a lot inside the handsome method. While you guys take your time medication, you go to the bathroom, maybe take a shower, brush your teeth, start to get ready for the day. Okay, boom, we've got our hour.
(19:38):
And then the first thing that you're grabbing is a cup of coffee, right? That cup of coffee stimulates your digestive tract. And it pushes things through much quicker and doesn't allow for the absorption to happen. So I'm not saying you can't have caffeine or coffee, but if we flip things around a little bit, and this has made a huge difference for our clients inside the Hampton method is taking thyroid medication waiting that hour, hour and a half eating breakfast, eating a nutrient dense breakfast, and then having their cup of coffee. After that, after we say about nine P 9:00 AM, don't drink it at 9:00 PM. unless you work grave yard shift, and then things change a little bit, but for the general population, you know, 9:00 AM, again, depending on what time you wake up and things like that, you're gonna have more sustainable energy throughout the day.
(20:41):
And you're going to get the maximum benefits from your thyroid hormone. So even small, small, small changes like that will make a huge difference. So hopefully you guys learned something today and you found tons of value. If you guys have any questions about this, please let me know, reach out to me.
