11 But when Christ came as high priest of the good things that are now already here, he went through the greater and more perfect tabernacle that is not made with human hands, that is to say, is not a part of this creation. 12 He did not enter by means of the blood of goats and calves; but he entered the Most Holy Place once for all by his own blood, so obtaining eternal redemption. 13 The blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a heifer sprinkled on those who are ceremonially unclean sanctify them so that they are outwardly clean. 14 How much more, then, will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences from acts that lead to death, so that we may serve the living God!
15 For this reason Christ is the mediator of a new covenant, that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance – now that he has died as a ransom to set them free from the sins committed under the first covenant. (Hebrews 9:11-15)
G’day! Today we continue to look together at Leviticus 16 and why there is a need for atonement In the beginning, God and humanity were in relationship. There was an innate intimacy between God and humanity. However, shortly after their creation, humanity disobeyed God’s clear command. Humanity said: “You know what, God. I love you but I think my way is best, so I am going to go do that.” Humanity went ahead with their own way, and in an act of disobedience, sinned against Almighty God. You can read about that in Genesis 3. The relationship was broken and afterwards there was nothing humanity could do about it, in order to restore that relationship between God and humanity.
That is the story of this broken world. A world which is in a mess. Even a cursory look around will tell you that. God could have just said “Oh well. I will just leave them to it.” But He didn’t do that! Because He is a God of love, God Himself needed to intervene, so that humanity could choose to return to being in an active, dynamic and intimate relationship with God. The Old Testament traces that journey, and that is where we are with the story before us with Moses, Aaron and the people of ancient Israel.
Come on in and let us look together at what we can learn about this need of Atonement. Together we explore questions such as: Why is there the need for atonement? Why was Jesus Christ Himself, a scapegoat? How did God respond to the breakaway of humanity from following Him?
