129 Scarface and the Geto Boys,The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid, & I’m A Cyborg But That’s Okay Preview
Indy talks about Southern Hip-Hop pioneers The Geto Boys, Scarface, and his autobiography Diary of a Madman, Samantha recommends the Old Hollywood historical fiction The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid, and we introduce next week’s watch, the (sort of) romantic comedy I’m A Cyborg But That’s Okay from Korean auteur Park Chan-wook!
Brad Terrence Jordan (born November 9, 1970), better known by his stage name Scarface, is an American rapper and record producer best known as a member of the Geto Boys, a hip hop group from Houston, Texas.[2] He grew up in Houston and is originally from the city's South Acres (Crestmont Park) neighborhood.[3] In 2012, The Source ranked him #16 on their list of the Top 50 Lyricists of All Time,[4] while About.com ranked him #6 on its list of the 50 Greatest MCs of Our Time (1987–2007).
The Geto Boys (originally spelled Ghetto Boys) is an American hip hop group originally formed in Houston, Texas. The group was formed in 1987.[1] The Geto Boys enjoyed success in the 1990s with the group's classic lineup consisting of Bushwick Bill, Scarface and Willie D, earning several certified albums and hit singles, including "Mind Playing Tricks on Me" which reached No. 1 on the Hot Rap Songs and #23 on the Billboard Hot 100.[2]
The Geto Boys earned notoriety for lyrics covering controversial topics such as misogyny, gore, psychotic experiences, and necrophilia. About.com ranked the Geto Boys No. 10 on its list of the 25 Best Rap Groups of All-Time, describing them as "southern rap pioneers who paved the way for future southern hip-hop acts."
The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo is a historical fiction novel by American author Taylor Jenkins Reid and published by Atria Books in 2017. The novel tells the story of the fictional Old Hollywood star Evelyn Hugo, who at the age of 79 decides to give a final interview to an unknown journalist, Monique Grant. According to Reid, Evelyn Hugo was loosely based in part on actresses Elizabeth Taylor, who was married eight times to seven different men, and Ava Gardner, who revealed the secrets of her life to a journalist which was eventually published as Ava Gardner: The Secret Conversations. Reid also discusses how Rita Hayworth was a big influence on the character Evelyn Hugo. Hayworth, whose father was a Spaniard, had a very similar start to Hugo which can be seen in the beginning of the novel.
