Sometime in the late 1960s, screenwriters Juilan and Rita Fink developed the story of a hard-nosed detective, willing to test the boundaries of the law in order to catch the city's most dangerous criminals. Their script, originally titled Dead Right, became the basis for a new type of action-thriller. 1971's Dirty Harry introduced audiences to Detective Harry Callahan (Clint Eastwood), who is tasked with stopping a deranged serial sniper. The commercial success of the film not only spawned multiple sequels, but also kicked off a wave of popularity for an entire generation of crime action-thrillers that would last decades.
