The God of the Living - Mark 12:18-27

Every single one of us is destined to die one day. Cannot escape that truth. The question is, what happens when we die? Will it be like an end of a movie – just enter into nothingness – cease to exist? Or – go to sleep, see a light in a tunnel and go up to the clouds and become angels. Or – re-incarnated – return to the earth as a different person or even an animal! Or – continue life in some form in another realm. Lots of different ideas out there. Overall, this subject is shrouded in vagueness and for many it brings about lots of uncertainty and even fear, so lots of people would rather not talk about it.

In our text this week, we see the Sadducees – a sect of Jews – engage with Jesus on this very question. They did not believe in life after death, but try to justify their own view by catching Jesus out through a trick question. They disbelieved God’s promises in his Word and his power to raise the dead.

What we’re going to see is that in Christ, there is indeed life after death. Why? Because God is God of the living, not the dead.
