Our Mistakes Show Us a Way Out of Suffering

One of our greatest fears is making a mistake.

We especially fear the secondary outcomes of mistakes: feeling shame, humiliation, and regret; perceiving ourselves as incompetent; and letting others down.

We think the pain we feel comes from the mistake. But it’s exacerbated by those secondary outcomes and the story we tell.

The human journey is fueled by curiosity and experiments for which we can’t know the outcome.

We will make mistakes along the way. But we can choose not to suffer in them.

Making mistakes is part of being human. How we heal from mistakes is how we mature.

How can we accelerate the healing after a mistake?

We must understand that mistakes cause us pain, but we add suffering to the pain.

We create our own suffering through the story we tell about the mistake and the emotions we feel when we sit in that victim story.

And it’s our suffering that keeps us from healing the pains caused by the mistake.

What if we could shorten the suffering and step out of it in a way that releases us and allows us to heal?

We do this by liberating ourselves from the bondage of the story we created about the mistake.

The mistake remains; nothing is erased. But we see it from a higher perspective: one that moves away from blame, anger, and regret and embraces acceptance, forgiveness, and freedom.
