People first language and writing disabled characters with romance author Katie Mettner
DJ Bowman-Smith (www.djbowmansmith.com) chats about her writing life this week and then welcomes her guest Katie Mettner.
Katie Mettner writes small-town romantic tales with happily-ever-afters. Katie discusses how to write disabled characters authentically. Her website features a useful list of people-first language. Find that and her books and much more here www.katiemettner.com
Katie talks about how her writing enables others to understand disability and particularly that most people (disabled or not) are just trying to get on with their lives, explaining that people with disabilities should not be (as is typical) portrayed as helpless or heroically inspirational for doing simple, basic activities.
Her book covers are designed by Carrie Butler, you can find Carrie here;

Katie tells us about the difficulties involved when searching stock images for disabled people to use for her covers and also about the benefits of using the same designer for a long time.
