In Neapel wurde zum ersten Mal Zeugnis von einem Reitturnier abgelegt, bei dem sich die Ritter mit Kugeln aus Ton bewarfen. Diese runden Tongefässe nannte man «carusiello», aus dem wohl der Name der sich drehenden Jahrmarktattraktion entstand.

Rainer Maria Rilke (1875–1926) hat das drehende Karussell beobachtet und seine Eindrücke in einem Gedicht festgehalten – hier vorgetragen von Tom von Arx, Sprecher der Zaunkönigsklasse.
