Courage, according to Merriam-Webster, is the mental or moral strength to venture, persevere, and withstand danger, fear, or difficulty. When you decide to try something new, it always takes courage. And, when you tri, you ARE courageous.
In the Fall of 2019, , Hampton University Triathlon became the 19th Varsity Sport to join the campus. Hampton was the sixth NCAA Division 1 program and the 26th school to sponsor the sport.
This is a big deal on many levels.
Hampton blazes new ground as the First HBCU to have a triathlon team, and to be an important part of bringing women’s triathlon to NCAA. They are led by Head Coach Dr. Jodi Jenson and Assistant Coach Mangai Hosang. They are building memories and creating a legacy for women of color in sport and for triathlon. They are the REAL H.U. Lady Pirates!
We get an opportunity to talk with three team members and learn more about their first-year experiences, racing, and what’s on the horizon for the team.
