On Feb. 6th, a magnitude 7.8 earthquake ripped through Turkey and Syria. Unlike Turkey, a relatively modernized country, Syria is divided by a nearly twelve-year civil war. We cannot discuss the effect of the earthquake without first understanding the history and geopolitics of the region.
