Movies from the ‘40s and ‘50s have this bright and shiny sheen. Dancing, singing, romance, adventure… choreographed swimming(?) But off camera it was a dark and politically divisive time. Sounds familiar huh? Fear of the ‘other’ was rampant. The enforcement of the Hays Code sterilized what movie goers saw on screen. Political and religious influence enforced discrimination and The Hollywood Blacklist was put into affect. In our latest episode we look into this complicated period of filmmaking and discuss some of the modern films that expose the dark areas of the golden age of Hollywood. We also talk about the rise and fall of the Hays Code, and how the MPAA ratings system took its place.
