Edward II hat abgedankt und seinem Sohn den Thron übergeben. Freiwillig hat er das allerdings nicht getan. Nun sitzt er, als Lord Edward von Carnarvon, gefangen in Berkeley Castle und hofft auf bessere Zeiten. Die kommen allerdings nicht, ganz im Gegenteil: der abgesetzte König verstirbt nach nur wenigen Monaten. Woran, darüber gehen die Meinungen auseinander.
