Raise Your Standards: Breaking the Ceiling, Elevating the Floor!
Today, I want to talk to you about standards. So many times we look at what is the ceiling, we never focus on where is the floor? We focus on raising the ceiling. We focus on sometimes when things are going bad, lowering the ceiling, so things seem more achievable. We kind of, in a sense, give up so that we can tell ourselves that we're reaching our goals.
It's a way to justify things, and sometimes that's okay if that helps you to continue and keep motivated versus quitting. But what we forget is that sometimes we need to raise the floor with the ceiling. We need to raise our standards and stop settling. Here's what I mean. If you got a job and you started off at $40,000 a year, then you get promoted and you get a new job.
Now it's paying $80,000 a year. What happens when you get laid off? You turn around, look for a job, and if you don't find another one just like that, oh, nobody's hiring. Well, the reality is there's people hiring. There's just not people hiring at that $80,000 job you're looking for. So why won't you go back and start over and take that 40,000?
Well, I don't want to go back. I don't want to start over. So the point is, you set yourself a new standard. Euro's the floor, you set the new standard, and you have a new ceiling of where you want to, you know where you want to go and what you want to achieve. So why is it that we limit ourselves to our salary and our jobs to raise our standards?
Should we not raise our standards in every other part of our lives? How much better would your life be if you raise your standards versus going back and settling every time something didn't go right? Something to ponder. My message is raise your standards, not just the ceilings. Don't go backwards. Keep moving forward. This has been minute Monday's.
