Sermon #562
In the parable of the wheat and tares, or the parable of the weeds, we find that both the children of the Kingdom of God and the children of the devil are planted in the earth together, and that they are allowed to grow together. At the end of all things, Jesus tells us, the wheat will be gathered into the barn and the tares bundled to be burned forever. In this parable we see a glimpse of hell as Jesus speaks of it, that it is a place of eternal conscious torment. But our desire to follow the Lord and be obedient to his commands should come not from a fear of hell, but the love we feel for the God who rescued us from it.
