“The Toxic War on Masculinity: How Christianity Reconciles the Sexes” by Nancy R. Pearcey (BakerBooks) shows how the current anti-male mentality is rooted in history. Prior to the Industrial Revolution, families has businesses in which every family member participated, whether it was a fair (as most were) or a store. With the growth of the city and the creation of jobs in officers or factories, men grew increasingly separated from their wives and children, so women were forced to take on much of the leadership roles in the family unit. With the addition of Social Darwinism (which said people are merely animals and the fittest survive), all manner of misbehavior that was incompatible with Christian teaching was excused by society. No one profited by these changes, including men. But the Bible's expectations of the partnership between men and women in raising families is very different from the low expectations of secular culture. By embracing the concept of men and women as both created by and beloved of God and equal in His sight, we can restore balance and return joy!
