På Gentofte Station holder et forsinket lokaltog fra Holte fyldt med glade, men trætte udflugtsrejsende. Toget er klar til afgang, men bliver pludselig påkørt af et særtog fra Helsingør, der kører uden stop fra Holte til København.

Herman Bang skriver om ulykken. Karin Michaelis befinder sig i én af togvognene.

Gentofteulykken var – målt i antallet af omkomne og sårede – den største jernbaneulykke som var indtruffet på de danske jernbaner.
