November 19, 2023 - Sunday AM Bible Class
Summary of last week’s class:
Revelation 20 describes the complete defeat of Satan. Just like the beast and false prophet (cf. 19:20-21) he is bound and overthrown by the Lord. John uses symbolic terminology to describe his ruin, but the message is clear: Rome will be destroyed and so will the Devil who used Rome to torment the people of God (20:1-3). Satan will be released after some time to continue to do his wicked work in the world but the final result for him will be the same. John describes the martyred saints as reigning victoriously with Jesus and enjoying the blessings of the first resurrection as they look forward to the second and final resurrection (20:4-6). Though Satan will try other things in the future with other nations and systems he will meet the same fate (Rev. 20:7-10). John closes the chapter with a judgment scene. While some view this as a description of the final judgment I believe it’s best to view it as a picture of the judgment/defeat of Rome and those who were aligned with her in the first century (20:11-15).
