Indonesia on ottanut konservatiivisemman islamistisen ilmeen viime vuosien aikana. Tämä voi lisätä erityisesti muslimitaustaisten kristittyjen kohtaamaa paheksuntaa, kovaa painostusta palata islamiin, sanallista väkivaltaa ja sosiaalista eristämistä. Joissakin tapauksissa perhe lopettaa kaiken antamansa tuen. Naimisissa olevat naiset saattavat pitää uuden uskonsa salassa välttääkseen avioeron uhkaa. Jotkut naiset kohtaavat kristinuskon harjoittamisen vuoksi paljon henkistä väkivaltaa, jopa tappouhkauksia.
