In Focus with Carolyn Hutcheson
Society & Culture
On January 19 and 21, Opera Birmingham will present the world premiere of "Touch,"
a new opera about Alabama's Helen Keller, the beloved deaf-blind international figure and advocate. Co-librettist Marianna Mott
Newirth talks with In Focus host Carolyn Hutcheson about writing Keller's story and
including lesser-known facts about her life. Newirth's own professional career has been transformed, as she now serves as executive producer of New York's first disability-affirmative opera company. The opera, "Touch," is sold-out for both performances
in Birmingham.
