This week we are looking at the hymn "I Come to Thee, O Blessed Lord" (Hymn 330 in The Lutheran Hymnal) as we look ahead to the celebration of the Lord's Supper this weekend.
This hymn is found in the Confession and Absolution section of our hymnal, but would also fit well in the Lord's Supper section. It was written by Norwegian pastor and hymn writer, Magnus Landstad, who wrote several other hymns that are also included in our hymnal.
This hymn is based largely on portions of Psalm 51 and 130 and Paul's words in 1 Corinthians 11, dealing with the celebration of the Lord's Supper. As we study and sing this hymn, we are reminded that the Lord's Supper is not intended for everyone, but for those who are properly prepared to receive it through Spirit worked faith and repentance. As the hymn points us to our Savior's work for us, it should also move us to desire to receive this Sacrament which our Savior has instituted for our comfort and assurance of forgiveness.
Study this hymn with us, as we are reminded of our sin and unworthiness, and as we are pointed to Jesus and His worthiness as our Savior from sin.
Take comfort in the inspired words of the Psalmist: “If You, LORD, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who could stand? But there is forgiveness with You, That You may be feared.” (Psalm 130:3-4).
The LORD will bless your worship this weekend!
