Beyond the Gates viewers are introduced to a new ensemble of characters, led by the powerful Dupree and Hawthorne families. Anita Dupree (Tamara Tunie) is the matriarch of the family, a former singer who sacrifices her career to support her husband, Vernon Dupree (Clifton Davis), a retired congressman and civil rights activist. Their youngest daughter, Danni Dupree (Karla Mosley), is a high school dropout turned model, managing her daughter's career while plotting revenge against her ex-husband on the CBS soap opera.

BTG meets the Hawthorne family that includes Jacob Hawthorne (Jibre Hordges), a Maryland detective married to Naomi Hamilton Hawthorne (Arielle Prepetit), the oldest Dupree daughter. Naomi, a civil lawyer, is estranged from her father after he cheated on her mother with her best friend, Hayley Lawson (Marquita Goings).

Beyond the Gates sees other key characters include Dr. Ted Richardson (Maurice Johnson), a successful plastic surgeon with a secretive past, and Martin Richardson (Brandon Claybon), who aims to be the first openly gay president. Martin's husband, Bradley Smith (Mike Manning), is a stay-at-home dad to their two adopted children.
