Feast of St Augustine of Canterbury 1 Thessalonians 2: 2-8
An English monk and an Italian monk crossed paths in more than one sense: Pelagius travelled from England to Rome and caused a lot of problems by teaching a heresy; an Italian monk called Augustine loudly and publicly opposed Pelagius and travelled from Rome to Canterbury in England to revive a failing church.
Their story is an echo of St Paul's experience with the church in Thessaloniki; and it chimes with Pope Francis' message that church leaders need to "return to their dioceses" and "smell the sheep".
