The Life of Jesus – The Sermon on the Mount
The Overflow of the Kingdom Heart
Matthew 6:1-18
The Power of Living from the Father’s Love
Matthew 6:1
6 "Be careful not to do your 'acts of righteousness' before men, to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven.
We live from the overflow of our hearts
Luke 6:45
45 The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For out of the overflow of his heart his mouth speaks.
Until we know the love of the Father, we will continually search for significance, approval, and meaning from others, never satisfying this thirst. Every relationship has the potential to be come an identity crisis.
When our hearts are filled with the Father’s love, we no longer search for significance and approval, we live from our identity as loved sons and daughters, and righteous acts are the natural overflow.
John 4:14
14 but whoever drinks the water I [Jesus] give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life."
Righteousness at its core is love for God and love for others. We truly love when our love is the overflow of the love we have received from God.
Our first priority, then, is to receive and live in God’s love
1 John 4:16-20
16 And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in him. 17 In this way, love is made complete among us …
19 We love because he first loved us.
The Depth of God’s Love for Us is Beyond Comprehension
God the Father loves us with the same love He loves Jesus with!
John 17:23, 26 Jesus’Prayer to the Father
23 I in them and you in me. May they be brought to complete unity to let the world know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.
26 I have made you known to them, and will continue to make you known in order that the love you have for me may be in them and that I myself may be in them."
1 John 3:1
1 How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!
“You sum up the whole of New Testament religion if you describe it as the knowledge of God as one’s holy Father. If you want to judge how well a person understands Christianity, find out how much he makes of the thought of being God’s child, and having God as his Father. If this is not the thought that prompts and controls his worship and prayers and his whole outlook on life, it means that he does not understand Christianity very well at all. For everything that Christ taught, everything that makes the New Testament new, and better than the Old, everything that is distinctively Christian as opposed to merely Jewish, is summed up in the knowledge of the Father of God. ‘Father’is the Christian name for God.”

The Overflow of the Kingdom Heart
Jesus in his humanity lived from the foundation of God the Father’s love and approval, and now as sons and daughters of God we can live from that same secure foundation
John 6:27
27 Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. Onhim God the Father has placed his seal of approval."
When we intimately know the Father, He shows us what He is saying and doing, and we join Him in His work.
John 5:19-20
19 Jesus gave them this answer: "I tell you the truth, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does. 20 For the Father loves the Son and shows him all he does. Yes, to your amazement he will show him even greater things than these.
Because we are children of the Father, loved by the Father, our full hearts overflow in acts of Righteousness from Him and for Him.
Matthew 6:3-4 Giving to the needy…for the eyes of our Father
3 But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4 so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.
Matthew 6:6-7 Communing with the Father in Prayer for the advance of His Kingdom
6 But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.
Matthew 6:17-18 Cultivating a Hunger for God ..l for the eyes of the Father
17 But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, 18 so that it will not be obvious to men that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.
